In my freelancing adventure here I troll the Internet several times a week looking for jobs.
I think, so far, what's interesting is that none of those have panned out. Even better than that, I've been boggled by ads that ask for experienced writers, good writers, however you (or the lister) wants to word it. Then they offer a dime a word. Or for editing, $10 an hour.
How on Earth can you get a talented, experienced writer/editor for so little money? My theory is they are trying to get people pumped up with their own ego and making a trade off between ego and money. If an employer makes someone feel like they're part of an elite group, then they don't have to pay them a real rate for their work.
Sorry, I guess I have a need for both. I'm hoping what I do will get me paid. And my experience isn't going to allow me to sell myself short.

April,
I'm taking a course on starting a pet sitting business and one of the first things the instructor said was not to devalue your time.
You are absolutely right - your experience and talent is worth more that $10 an hour. That's Starbucks salary and they offer health insurance.
Sometimes I think writers are just so happy to get their name in print along with something they've written, that they'll (and I include myself in that) will accept anything. I know I did and probably still will - but writing is not my full time job.
Stick with it, my friend.
You'll get there.
